Stationed in the heart of India, the exquisite Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the innumerable wildlife sanctuaries of Madhya Pradesh making it a sight for sore eyes.
Situated in the eastern Satpura hill range of the Umaria district, Bandhavgarh National Park boastfully covers an enormous expanse of 1536 square kilometres. But what makes Bandhavgarh really outstanding is its entanglement in Ramayana. Astoundingly, Bandhavgarh has been mentioned in our prehistoric legendary books like the NaradPancharatra, Shiv Purana and the Ramayana.
According to the legends, the word Bandhavgarh is a union of two words: Bandhav and Garh, where the word ‘bandhav’ translates to ‘brother’ and the word ‘garh’ translates to ‘fort’.
So, the word Bandhavgarh denotes Brother’s fort. Isn’t that amazing?
It has been taken as gospel that Lord Rama gifted the Bandhavgarh Fort to his younger brother, Lakshmana, to keep an eye on Lanka. The Bandhavgarh Fort is positioned in the core Tala zone of Bandhavgarh National Park. The Park comprises 3 central zones; the rich and lush Tala Zone comprising the highest density of tigers, the scenic Magadhi Zone, and the evergreen Khitauli Zone.
The Panpatha zone, the Dhamokhar Zone and the Johila Zone are the surrounding buffer zones also rich in flora and fauna.
The foremost reason for Bandhavgarh being prominent even today is because its affluence in flora and fauna. The substantial population of the Royal Bengal Tigers is the charisma of this jungle labelling it as Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Apart from the staggering tigers, Bandhavgarh has a rich population of 34 species of mammals including Bison, Sambar, Nilgai, Indian Leopard, striped hyena, the Indian wolf, etc and nearly 260 species of birds and 80 species of butterflies. What more could we possiblyask for?
